Artist’s Statement

I make dances inspired by my various interests and their interplay. These include natural processes studied by science, literature and storytelling, and the concepts that shape human experiences and connect the themes of human nature, identity, and human rights. I have the desire to convey concepts and tell (sometimes non-linear) stories, and this often results in multiple unexpected layers of character, setting or worldbuilding, and meaning in my work. My fascination with worldbuilding often leads me to use sets, lighting, and props as an integral part of my choreography. I am heavily influenced by music and the circumstances under which it was written. I am interested in seeing my own movement translated onto other dancers’ bodies, but I also like to create choreography with a specific dancer’s movement style in mind. As a performer I seek out ways of using my movement to evoke authentic feelings, both physical and emotional, in myself and my audience. I find that meaning comes from a performer’s ability to have a genuine experience while on stage, and I seek out projects that provide opportunities for this. This could be choreography that I am a part of generating, or that I am learning.
